Senior Lecturer in Food Science

Metropolia University of Applied Sciences is seeking a Senior Lecturer in Food Science for a permanent position. The role focuses on food quality, product safety, and nutrition, with a primary responsibility to teach in the Biotechnology and Food Engineering programme.

Main Tasks

• Teaching in areas such as food quality and safety, nutrition and health, and sustainable product development.
• Designing pedagogy, including online learning materials, laboratory work, and project work.
• Developing the curriculum to align with food industry needs and the modern workforce.
• Supervising theses and conducting RDI (Research, Development, and Innovation) activities.
• Collaborating on projects with companies and stakeholders in the food, nutrition, and bioeconomy sectors.
• Conducting on-site teaching in Shanghai, China (two-week periods, at least twice per semester) and online teaching.

Requirements

• Relevant Master's degree (e.g., food science, food technology, nutrition science, or a related field).
• At least three years of relevant work experience in the food industry or a closely related field.
• Strong understanding of industry needs and an established professional network in the food sector.
• Ability to work directly with companies and integrate real industrial cases into teaching and RDI.
• Willingness and ability to travel to and work in Shanghai, China, for regular two-week teaching periods.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a diverse, international, and intercultural environment.
• Fluency in English and willingness to learn Finnish (support provided).
• Professional Teacher Education qualification (can be completed within three years of appointment if not already held).

Preferred Qualifications

• Doctoral degree (PhD, DSc, or equivalent).
• Experience in food quality management, food safety systems, HSEQ, product safety, and risk-based thinking.
• Expertise in nutrition and nutritional physiology, functional foods, or sensory evaluation.
• Proven experience in international/multicultural environments and industry collaboration.
