At AAU Energy, a PhD stipend is available within the general study programme in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The position is full-time with a duration of three years, starting from 1 December 2026 or shortly thereafter.

Your work tasks
In relation to the GreenMag project, you will be based at the Aalborg campus within the Section of Power Electronics Systems and Materials. Your research will focus on developing innovative thermal management technologies for megawatt planar magnetics in future electrification systems.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Analysing thermal behaviour and heat transfer mechanisms in high-power planar magnetic components.
  • Designing and evaluating cooling concepts and integrating these solutions into realistic converter systems.
  • Developing multiphysics simulation models using finite element modelling tools to investigate thermal performance and material choices.
  • Designing, manufacturing, and experimentally validating novel thermal management solutions.
  • Collaborating with academic and industrial partners, disseminating results through publications and conferences, and contributing to teaching and supervision activities.

Your competencies

  • A Master’s degree in Power Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a closely related field that qualifies you for PhD enrolment.
  • Motivation to work at the interface between thermal science, electromagnetics, and power electronics.
  • Strong analytical skills and a structured approach to modelling and problem-solving.
  • Proficiency with numerical tools for thermal and multiphysics analysis.
  • Experience with thermal analysis, power electronics, or magnetic component design is an advantage.
  • Experience with finite element analysis tools (e.g., COMSOL Multiphysics or ANSYS) is an advantage.
  • Experience with experimental testing, prototype development, or laboratory work is beneficial.
  • Good communication skills in English (written and spoken) for scientific publications and international meetings.
  • Ability to work independently and take responsibility for the project while contributing to collaborative research.

Qualification requirements

  • Candidates must be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science.\n- Completion of PhD courses (30 ECTS) and experience with teaching or knowledge dissemination is required.\n- An external research stay outside of Aalborg University (preferably 3-6 months) is required.

Work conditions and benefits

  • The position is based at the Aalborg campus in a highly international research environment.\n- Access to world-class laboratory and workshop facilities for design, manufacturing, and testing.\n- Employment is governed by the AC collective agreement.\n- A mutual probationary period of 3 months applies.
